Retaining Wall Repair

Walmart MSE Wall Repair

Riverside County, California

Tieback and structural concrete repair of a failed 1,200-foot MSE wall with 17 homes above and a Walmart parking lot below.

The Problem

Site Conditions That Drove the Work

Soon after completion of a 1,200-foot-long mechanically stabilized earth wall, significant movement developed in the wall and the slope above, threatening the rear yards of 17 homes above the commercial property. A repair solution was needed that could arrest the slope movement and restore stability to both the wall and the slope.

The Solution

J.C. Baldwin installed 293 tiebacks and applied 1,710 cubic yards of shotcrete to repair the 1,260-foot-long wall, which ranged from 12 to 22 feet in height across 22,000 square feet of wall face. The structural concrete and tieback system addressed both the wall movement and the slope instability above.

Outcome

The repair stabilized the MSE wall and protected the 17 homes above from further instability, restoring the structural integrity of the retaining system.
