Careers

Big Enough to Deliver. Small Enough to Know Your Name.

Build your career with an established California contractor where we know one another, take pride in our work, and solve difficult challenges as a team.

Why Work for Us?

Fifty Years of Hard Jobs. One Tight Team.

We have tackled unique and challenging geotechnical construction projects as a team throughout Southern California since 1976. Many tenured employees have worked with the Company for over two decades, and our shared experience gives us the tools and know how to keep hard jobs moving forward safely and successfully.

At J.C. Baldwin, your work is visible, communication is direct, and our field and office teams know who they are working with. Good ideas and dependable effort make a real difference here.

We also work hard against the field-versus-office divide. Plenty of companies live with it, and even good ones let it creep in. We deliver projects together: the office is measured by whether the crew has what it needs, and everyone is held to the same standard on the same goal — a hard job delivered without safety incidents on time and on budget. The people who succeed here tend to share two traits. Pride: they want to walk off a hard job knowing they did something worthwhile. And humility: they know they are not above anyone on the site, and that there is always more to learn from the person next to them.

If that sounds like you, and you want to be part of a crew that looks out for one another, we would like to hear from you.

Opening 01

Project Manager

Location
Carlsbad, CA / California Project Sites
Type
Full-Time, Salary
I’m Interested

Lead our specialized coastal, geotechnical, and general engineering projects from preconstruction through closeout. You will work directly with the Owner and coordinate with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and our field crews.

This is a force-multiplier role, not a seat in an established hierarchy. We are looking for someone with an ownership mentality: wired to see problems coming and solve them before being asked, motivated by successful outcomes and hard-earned reputation as much as by a paycheck, and able to take direction and then run largely independently. You will bring experience and judgment we do not have in-house, and we want you to use it — the right person will help build this position out around their own strengths rather than inherit someone else’s job description. We also expect you to get your hands dirty with the crew now and then. Respect here is earned in the field, and we have no interest in an office-versus-field divide.

Position Requirements

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • Demonstrated construction project management experience — heavy civil, geotechnical, drilling, concrete, or coastal work is preferred — with a track record of running work independently and owning the outcome rather than waiting for direction
  • Ability to read plans and specifications and turn them into clear scopes, schedules, and field direction
  • Strong cost tracking, documentation, communication, and organizational skills, plus the initiative to improve or build out the systems behind them
  • Comfort working between the office and active jobsites, including a willingness to get your hands dirty alongside the crew when the job calls for it

Opening 02

Laborer

Location
California Project Sites
Type
Full-Time, Hourly

As a small company, everyone wears several hats — in a single week you may be tying steel, handling material, supporting our drillers, mixing grout, placing concrete, running erosion control, cleaning up the site, and assisting experienced craft workers and equipment operators. This is physically demanding work on real terrain, not conventional civil work from the shoulder of a road. No task here is unimportant, and the people who do best are the ones eager to learn every part of the job.

Position Requirements

  • Eagerness to learn the trade and willingness to take on any task asked of you — construction experience is preferred, but work ethic and attitude matter more
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy loads, ascend and descend steep slopes and uneven ground, work comfortably from scaffolding and at heights, and work safely around heavy equipment, tools, and changing outdoor conditions
  • Ability to follow direction, stay productive, and contribute to a team throughout the workday, treating no task as unimportant
  • Reliable transportation to assigned meeting points or project sites
